The glory and wealth of Babylon was a
result of the wisdom of its people, who learned how to become wealthy. The
storehouse of treasure was a purse that could be made full and round. This book
recommends seven cures for a lean purse for those who desire to have more
money."
THE FIRST CURE
"Start fattening
your purse”
Each person earns money through work,
which is converted into money and stored in our purse. Depending on our
ability, we may earn more or less. If we desire to build a fortune, we must
save one-tenth of our earnings. Once we start doing this, our purse will fill
up and bring satisfaction to our soul. The coin we take out of the purse will
bring us the first pleasure, and the coin we leave within it will bring us more
later.
“For each ten coins you put in, to spend but nine.”
THE SECOND CURE
"Control your
expenditures “
Some people make more money than
others, and some have larger families to maintain, but all budgets are equally
tight. We all have desires that our wages cannot satisfy. Time, strength,
distance, food, and enjoyment all have limitations, as do our financial
resources. Budgeting enables us to limit our spending and pay for requirements,
pleasure, and worthy desires without spending more than nine-tenths of our
earnings.
“Budget your expenses that you may have coins to pay for
necessities, to pay for your enjoyment, and to gratify your worthwhile desires
without spending more than nine-tenths of your earnings.”
THE THIRD CURE
"Make your gold
multiply”
After fattening our slim purse by
saving one-tenth of our earnings and controlling our spending, the next stage
is to put our money to work and expand it. Each coin can make additional money
by investing it, much as a herd of sheep can breed and grow over time. Our
income will rise as more people work for us and their children and
grandchildren continue to work.
“Put each coin to laboring that it may reproduce its kind,
even as the flocks of the field, and help bring to thee income, a stream of
wealth that shall flow constantly into your purse.”
THE FOURTH
"Guard your
treasure from loss”
The money in our purse must be kept
safe or it will be lost. Everyone is lured by possibilities that promise
enormous sums of money, but we must conduct thorough research before investing.
We should not be overconfident in our own abilities and should seek the
guidance of experienced others while managing our money for profit.
“Guard thy treasure from loss by investing only where thy
principle is safe, where it may be reclaimed if desirable, and where thou will
not fail to collect the fair rental. Consult with wise men. Secure the advice
of those experienced in the profitable handling of gold. Let their wisdom
protect thy treasure from unsafe investment.”
THE FIFTH CURE
"Make of thy
dwelling a profitable investment”
If we set aside nine-tenths of our
earnings for living and enjoying life, we can use a portion of this nine-tenths
to turn our living expenses into a profitable investment by buying a house.
This can greatly reduce our cost of living, making more of our earnings
available for pleasure and fulfilling our desires.
“Own thy own home”
THE SIXTH CURE
“Insure a future income”
People's lives progress from young to
elderly, and in order to assist our families, we must invest in safe plans that
provide for our family's future when we die. A person may buy a house or
property that has been carefully selected for its utility and future value, or
they could lend a small sum to a moneylender and raise it at regular intervals.
No one should be scared to insure for old age and safeguard their family,
regardless of how successful their business or finances are .
“Provide in advance for the needs of thy growing age and
the protection of thy family.”
THE SEVENTH CURE
“Increase thy ability
to earn”
Earning money necessitates the
presence of a strong desire. A person's ambition to earn money begins with little
quantities and progresses to higher sums as they study and gain experience. The
more wisdom we gain, the more money we can make. To be generously rewarded, one
must pursue knowledge and master their craft.
“Thus, the seventh and last remedy for a lean purse is to
cultivate your own power, to study and become wiser, to become skillfull , and to act in a way that respects
yourself.”
These are
the seven treatments for a lean purse, which the author claims were gained
through the experience of a long and successful life and can help individuals
make more money and fatten their lean purse.
